Lot no. 58
Jules BARBEY D'AUREVILLY (1808-1889). L.A.S., Paris, Sunday morning [October 1854?], to Charles Baudelaire 1 page and a half in-8 in red ink on pink paper. Letter to Baudelaire, during an interruption in the publication in Le Pays of Edgar Poe's tales translated by Baudelaire.
Barbey promises "Beaudelaire" to speak to Dutacq about the matter... "There is no danger of this happening, since your publication has been interrupted. This interruption conceals nothing bad for you. Lhéritier, who spoke to me very nobly about you, must have given you reasons based on your interest and the position you may one day take in the journal. We have a very high opinion of your talent in your translation alone (which, as a translation, seems to me to be a masterpiece). It's mine too, and I'm glad of it.
Letters to Baudelaire, p. 30-31.
