Lot no. 288
Jules VERNE Twenty thousand leagues under the sea. Paris, Hetzel et Cie, (1871). Large in 8, full type I "personalised" cardboard, brick-coloured. The upper cover is decorated with a fine rectangular design showing Captain Nemo and Professor Arronax looking out through the large porthole of the Nautilus' saloon. With a frame of cords, columns and tassels, all in a double cold frame. Smooth spine, separate boxes of fillets, some with floral decoration. Minor wear to corners, some more marked. Stains and minor soiling on cover, gold faded, headpieces with wear and defects, gutters good, edges gilt. Inner hinges good. Scattered foxing or small stains, some larger, int. fresh overall. There are several typos characteristic of the first edition: page 33, the bracket instead of the parenthesis, in the caption of the engraving. The caption to the engraving on page 345 refers to page 433 instead of 343. On the other hand, the caption on page 433 (refers to page 143 instead of 433) does not appear. Adorned with a fine frontispiece and numerous engravings, mostly in text, with captions. Printed by Jules Bonaventure, 55 quai des Grands-Augustins. Expert : Mr François Jullien
