Lot no. 77
A monochrome Chinese porcelain "twin fish" brush-washer. The circular brush-washer rests on a low foot and is carved on the inside with two fish with intertwined scales. The whole piece is covered in a translucent glaze with large cracks of pale ivory, and the rim is flared. This motif is reminiscent of ceramics from the Chinese Song dynasty (960-1279), in particular ding ceramics (定窑) or qingbai ceramics (青白瓷), both known for their finely carved or moulded decorations under a translucent glaze. The twin fish motif is a traditional Chinese symbol of abundance, prosperity and marital harmony. Six-character marks Qian-long and possibly period. D26 cm H: 7 cm. Perfect condition.
