"I started paying attention to paintings when I was a teenager. Art looked to me something so difficult, so impossible and so wonderful at the same time." Luis Feito
In 1953, the painter, graphic artist and sculptor Luis Feito travelled to Paris on a scholarship, where he met the leading exponents of Art Informel. He turned to the technique of spontaneous creation and increasingly experimented with materials such as sand and earth. Although Feito’s life centred on Paris for almost a quarter of a century from 1955, he remained in close contact with Spanish avant-garde artists such as Antonio Saura and Manuel Rivera. In 1957, he co-founded the artists' group "El Paso", which made a decisive contribution to the development of the Spanish art scene.
In the early 1960s, Feito's style was characterised by a muted colour palette of black, grey, white and ochre. As in this work, which shows an abstract composition, from 1961 Feito began to use more dramatic colours, in particular a strong red. From 1963 onwards, he worked towards an ever-greater reduction of form, minimising the use of materials and integrating circular elements into his artworks, which reflected his interest in Japanese culture. The continuous exploration of the relationships between surface textures, light, colour and form lends his works a mystical quality.

"I started paying attention to paintings when I was a teenager. Art looked to me something so difficult, so impossible and so wonderful at the same time." Luis Feito
