When he painted this view of Paris in 1902, Maximilien Luce decided to break away from pointillism and lengthen his brushstrokes somewhat. Using a palette of luminous colours from top to bottom, across a fairly well-ordered spectrum of light, the painter succeeded in depicting the banks of the Seine in a style that was characteristic of modern painting at the beginning of the century.
