Lot no. 101
[MENON (Joseph). La Nouvelle cuisinière bourgeoise, followed by L'office a l'usage de tous ceux qui se mêlent de dépenses de maisons. Paris, chez Guillyn, 1746. In-12 bound in brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). This edition is extremely rare. It is a forged manifesto of French origin published at the same date as the original edition. In addition to numerous errors, some recipes have been renamed: sauces made with "Cahors wine" replace those made with Champagne wine; shad from the Seine is replaced by shad from the Garonne (p. 140); a "Sauce à la Gascogne" accompanying hake seems to indicate an edition from south-west France, most likely Bordeaux. It is not mentioned in any of the bibliographies consulted, except for Cagle, no. 336. There is a copy in the Pierre de Crombrugghe library in poor condition. Copy in contemporary binding, boards restored. From the library of Édouard Nignon, with bookplate.
