NAPOLEON TIGHTENS ARMISTICE CONDITIONS AFTER FRIEDLAND BERTHIER (Louis-Alexandre). Letter signed "mal Ale Berthier" as major-general of the Grande Armée, addressed to Jérôme Bonaparte. Tilsit [today Sovietsk in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad], 27 June 1807. One p. in-4. "I have the honour of sending Your Highness an ampliation of the armistice concluded between Emperor Napoleon and the King of Prussia. You will please take the necessary measures for the execution of the provisions of the armistice. I have the honour of informing Your Highness that articles 2 and 4 of the armistice between Emperor Napoleon and Emperor Alexander are common to the armistice agreed with the Prussian army...". The battle of Friedland and the capture of Kœnigsberg, on 14 and 16 June 1807, had just brought an end to the Polish campaign that pitted France against Russia and Prussia. Two separate armistices were signed by Alexandre Berthier with his Russian (21 June) and Prussian (25 June) counterparts. An additional article was also signed with Prussia on 27 June, incorporating two articles from the armistice with Russia into the armistice with Prussia: article 2, which stipulated that if the truce was broken, a period of one month had to be observed before hostilities could be resumed, and article 4, which set the respective limits of the positions of the French and Russian armies. This addition meant that Prussia could also be threatened if Russia broke the armistice. This letter informs Jérôme Bonaparte of this addition: the Emperor's youngest son, then a major general, commanded the 9th corps of the Grande Armée and had just received the capitulation of Glatz (now Kłodzko in southern Poland). He would be made King of Westphalia a few days later under the Treaties of Tilsit, signed with Russia (7 July 1807) and Prussia (9 July 1807).
