Lot no. 309
National Socialism Kesting, Johanna Educational work in the B.D.M. (Bund Deutscher Mädel). With 13 photographic plates. Typescript. Dortmund, 1941. 3, 65, 2 pp. paperback. A rare contemporary insight into National Socialist indoctrination practice from a pedagogical perspective. The article systematically outlines the educational goals and methods with which the BDM pursued the ideologies of the Third Reich. Firstly, the educational goals of the Nazi regime are discussed, focussing on physical education, character formation and intellectual development - key elements in shaping young people in line with the Nazi ideal. The role of the main educational institutions - family, school and Hitler Youth (including the BDM) - is then examined as the three main pillars of education in Nazi Germany. These institutions were closely co-ordinated to ensure a uniform and ideologically consistent education. Kesting examines the specific role of the BDM in youth education and presents its functions in the wider context of the Hitler Youth. The work deals with the organisational structure of the BDM, its integration into the hierarchy of youth organisations and its activities. Franz Kade (1893-1987), who supervised the work, was a German reform pedagogue, Nazi pedagogue and professor of pedagogy. The work stems from his time as a professor at the University for Teacher Training in Dortmund. He was later a professor in Bonn and, after the end of the Second World War, professor of didactics and education in Oberhausen and Bonn.
