Lot no. 165
NERVAL Gérard de - Johann Wolfgang von GOETHE. Faust, tragedy by Goëthe. New complete translation, in prose and verse, by Gérard. Paris, Vve Dondey-Dupré, 1835; in-12, [4]-320 pp. later binding, burgundy half-maroquin with corners, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, black parts, gilt head. Second edition, partly original, of Gérard de Nerval's translation, much revised and corrected from the first version published in 1828.
Nerval wanted a different frontispiece from the first edition, engraved by his friend Adolphe Leleu after Rembrandt's The Old Man. It depicts "the vision of Doctor Faustus".
The etching, published without a name, bears here handwritten in ink: Faust d'après Rembrant and on the reverse, in the same hand: Exemplaire donné par Gérard.
A fine copy, without the Observations (8 pp.), in principle at the head of the work.
Champfleury, Les Vignettes romantiques, p. 416; Vicaire, III, 1014. Ex-libris Docteur Paul Guilly.
