Second edition, partly original, of Gérard de Nerval's translation, much revised and corrected from the first version published in 1828. Nerval wanted a different frontispiece from the first edition, engraved by his friend Adolphe Leleu after Rembrandt's The Old Man. It depicts "the vision of Doctor Faustus". The etching, published without a name, bears here handwritten in ink: Faust d'après Rembrant and on the reverse, in the same hand: Exemplaire donné par Gérard.
