NIEUHOF (Johan). L'Ambassade de la Compagnie orientale des Provinces Unies vers l'Empereur de la Chine, ou Grand Cam de Tartarie, faite par Pierre de Goyer et Jacob de Keyser. Leiden, [Jacob de Meurs] ; Paris, Thomas Jolly, 1665. 2 parts in one volume in-folio, brown basane, spine decorated, smooth edges (Binding of the period). First French edition, translated by Jean Le Carpentier and published at the same time as the Dutch original. Both editions feature the same intaglio illustrations, including a frontispiece, a portrait of Colbert, the work's dedicatee, a folded China map, 34 double-page plates and 108 vignettes in the text. The second part, printed under separate pagination, is entitled Description générale de l'Empire de la Chine. Johan Nieuhoff, born in 1630 and disappeared in Madagascar in 1672, left Germany to join the Dutch East India Company. He became the chronicler and draughtsman of the first Dutch embassy in China. Armorial bookplate pasted on verso of title. Binding restored, wetness throughout the volume, scattered foxing and spotting, tiny repair to bottom corner of first few leaves.
