Lot no. 866
PAIR OF COPTIC TEXTILE ROUNDELS FROM TUNICS. Ca. AD 500 - 600. A pair of decorated roundels from tunics. The first roundel features a lively polychrome design on a red ground, with four stylised hares or quadrupeds framing a central bust, possibly divine or idealised. Surrounding vegetal motifs and a geometric border reflect a fusion of Hellenistic and Egyptian traditions. Its compact format and bright palette suggest use on a child’s or ceremonial tunic. The second roundel presents a denser, more abstract composition, with a central medallion - perhaps depicting a ritual scene - encircled by stylised animals, humanoid figures, and geometric motifs. The intricate design and narrative quality point to a later date and illustrate the synthesis of classical, Eastern, and local visual languages in late Coptic textile art. For similar see: W. F.
