A pair of table lamps mounted on a Chinese porcelain baluster vase decorated with imari. This lamp was made from a converted porcelain vase, probably in the 18th or 19th century, with a European ormolu mount added to the base and top. The gilt bronze lids and bases are carved with stylised foliage and gilt floral decoration. The porcelain itself is in the imari style, a popular type of Chinese export crockery featuring cobalt blue, iron red and gold decoration, peonies and pierced and chased flowers. Combining an antique porcelain vase with ornate bronze mounts was common practice in nineteenth-century France, particularly during the Louis XV and Louis XVI revival periods. Many decorative objects and lamps of this type were assembled in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, in response to European taste for exotic and luxurious furniture.
