A pair of table lamps mounted on a famille rose "mandarin" porcelain baluster vase. This lamp was made from a converted porcelain vase, probably in the 18th or 19th century, with a European ormolu mount added to the base and top. The gilt bronze lids and bases are carved with stylised foliage and gilt floral decoration. A number of decorated figures are seated in front of a pavilion, chatting, smoking and children playing. The background includes stylised clouds, trees and plants. The combination of an antique porcelain vase with ornate bronze mounts was common practice in nineteenth-century France, particularly during the Louis XV and Louis XVI revival periods. A large number of lamps and decorative objects of this type were assembled at the end of the 19th century or at the beginning of the 20th century, in response to European taste for exotic and luxurious furniture. 18th/19th century.
