Lot no. 45
Pair of Famille Rose Chinese porcelain dishes from the Compagnie des Indes. This dish is an interesting and unique example of Chinese export porcelain, probably made for the European market during the 18th or early 19th century. The design features a central scene with a tree with multicoloured flowers, two dogs and a hat, possibly representing a scholar or mythical figure. The landscape has a whimsical quality, with bold strokes of yellow, pink and brown adding texture. A notable detail is the flying bird wearing what appears to be a Chinese knot or tassel-like object, adding a symbolic touch. The border is decorated with European-style foliage, interspersed with small stylised masks or grotesque faces, common decorative elements in export porcelain intended for Western collectors. This mixture of Chinese and Western artistic elements suggests that the plate was produced in Jingdezhen or Canton (Guangzhou) specifically for European customers. The vivid colours, gilded details and finely painted decorations on this plate make it a striking example of cross-cultural artistic exchange during the Qing dynasty. Qianlong period. 18th century. D: 22.5 cm. Repaired.
