Lot no. 200
Rectangular Japanese carved wooden panel "cock and weasel". This rectangular wooden panel is adorned with an intricate carved and painted motif. The artwork depicts a rooster and a weasel, both rendered in fine detail and naturalistic colours. The cockerel has bright golden-brown feathers and a red crest. It appears alert and perhaps in a defensive posture. The weasel, positioned on the right-hand side, has an elongated body and is depicted in motion, as if approaching the cockerel. The association of a cockerel and a weasel is a common theme in traditional East Asian art, often symbolising vigilance, cunning or the allegory of a struggle between different forces. The tray itself has a dark wooden surface with visible grain, giving it a rustic, antique appearance. The carved figures appear to be inlaid or slightly raised, adding depth to the composition. 19th/20th century. H: 32 cm, W: 60 cm.
