It's impossible to win the trust of workers without getting your hands dirty. On 14 April 1967, with a cigarette in his mouth and his shirt sleeves rolled up, Jacques Chirac, a young Member of Parliament for Corrèze, was tinkering with the engine of his Peugeot 403. On 8 May, he was appointed Secretary of State for Employment. It was the first ministerial portfolio for the man nicknamed "mon bulldozer" by President Pompidou.
June 1969. As driving president, Georges Pompidou wanted to put a tiger in the French engine. So what better way than to
to set an example for his nephew Jean-Paul, in Orvilliers, by plunging his hands into the guts of his Renault 4L. The rare arguments between the President and his wife are said to have centred on the question of who would take the wheel of the Porsche 356 type B acquired in 1962. At the Élysée Palace, the Head of State ordered two Citroën SM convertibles. After General de Gaulle's DS, the palace was "moving upmarket".
