Lot no. 72
An eight-sided pewter baluster jug on a raised pedestal.
Mark on the outer base, in the form of an escutcheon: hammer surmounted by a fleur-de-lys and a star, accompanied by the two letters G G.
15th century.
Neck height: 24 cm
The body and foot are damaged, the base of the handle has been re-soldered, but the shape is well preserved. The lid is missing.
Note: These jugs are well known to connoisseurs and have been the subject of numerous studies and publications. The example we are presenting today is the thirty-fifth known, and the only one to bear a master pewter potter's hallmark, making it an object of prime interest.
