Lot no. 8
Pio-Ignazio-Vittoriano CAMPANA (Turin, 1744 - Paris, 1786) Portrait of a woman in a blue and white dress next to a bouquet of flowers Watercolour and gum arabic on ivory, round form Diameter: 6.4 cm CIC n° 2024/BE02107/CE Low-cut enamelled gold frame, blue cardboard under glass on the back Portrait of a lady wearing a blue and white dress, watercolour and gum arabic on circular ivory, by P.-I.-V. Campana D.: 2.51 in. Provenance: Galerie Jaegy-Theoleyre, Paris ; Pierre Jourdan-Barry Collection (1926-2016); Then by descent; Private collection, Belgium Pierre Jourdan-Barry was very fond of the miniature painter Campana, of whom he owned almost ten portraits. Although the painter was born and trained in Turin, it was in Paris that his art blossomed, particularly in the service of Queen Marie-Antoinette, where he became Cabinet Painter in the late 1770s. The queen and her entourage were delighted by the doll-like faces, extremely slender waists and pastel tones of the portraits he painted so quickly. The preciousness of our lot and that of the two following lots attests to his great mastery in the refined rendering of the subjects and the feelings of the models. It should be remembered that the Countesses of Provence and Artois were, by birth, compatriots of the painter. This environment and the feminine circles of Versailles ensured the artist a comfortable income.
