Lot no. 82
Four Chinese export silver trays. Four silver platters, each with an embossed design inspired by historic Chinese coins. These trays may have been made from real silver coins that have been flattened and made into small dishes. Coin designs on the trays: left 1: depiction of a Chinese junk boat, similar to the design on the 1932 silver junk dollar, which was issued at the time of the Republic of China. The reverse shows a portrait of Sun Yat-Sen, surrounded by Chinese characters. This design is similar to that on the Sun Yat-Sen silver dollar, issued at the time of the Republic of China. Left 2: a circular inscription in Chinese characters, probably from a Republic of China silver coin, possibly a yuan shikai or a Sun Yat-Sen coin. The reverse depicts a dragon, frequently found on silver coins from the late Qing dynasty, such as the "dragon dollar" issued in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Right 3: a crown surrounding Chinese characters, reminiscent of the motifs on silver coins from the late Qing dynasty or the early Republic of China. The reverse features a portrait of Yuan shikai, resembling the Yuan shikai silver dollar (袁大头, "big-headed yuan"), a well-known coin minted during his presidency (1912-1916). 20th century. D: 9 cm right 4: a bilingual design with text in Chinese and English, with an emblem. This could be the Bank of Taiwan or another financial institution of the time. Reverse: another portrait of Sun Yat-Sen with a different design, possibly from a later issue of Republic of China coins.
