Lot no. 3034
Relief inlay from Eger with Lot and his daughters. Different types of wood, carved, partially painted and gilded. Scenic depiction of the biblical story from the Old Testament (Gen. 19:1-38). On the right, Lot, who has fled to the mountains with his daughters and is living in a cave. At a festively laid table, the lightly clad daughters make their father drunk in order to sleep with him and become pregnant. As a result, Lot becomes both father and grandfather to the two sons of Moab and Ben-Ammi, from whom the Moabite and Ammonite peoples emerge. In the background are the burning cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and Lot's wife, frozen to a pillar of salt. Such an artistically masterful, precious panel was either conceived as a single picture plate or embedded in a piece of furniture. The Eger relief inlays, which were already precious due to their elaborate production, had the status of art chamber pieces and were given to sovereigns, wealthy aristocrats, high clergy or wealthy citizens, but also served as diplomatic gifts from the magistrate of Eger. Old collection label on verso. 27.5 cm x 28 cm. Frame. Provenance: probably from the important collection of the ministerial councillor Hugo von Kilényi. A rare Bohemian Eger partially painted and gilt wood intarsia panel depicting Lot and his daughters. Old collection label "KILÉNYI" with no. 599, probably by the important collection of Hugo von Kilényi. Bohemia. Cheb. 17th cent.
