Rembrandt Bugatti is considered one of the most remarkable sculptors of the early 20th century, with a body of work comprising over 300 sculptures. Born in Milan as the third son of furniture designer and decorator Carlo Bugatti, he grew up in a profoundly artistic environment. His uncle was the painter Giovanni Segantini, and his brother was the famed automobile designer and founder of the Bugatti company. His talent was recognized and nurtured from an early age, allowing him to exhibit his work as early as age 18—first in Venice, and later in Paris. While living in Paris and Antwerp, Bugatti spent a great deal of time in zoological gardens, where he closely observed exotic animals and often modeled his sculptures directly on site. His dedication to precise observation enabled him to create uniquely expressive animal portraits. Animals had been his preferred subject since youth, and through his work, exotic animals became, for the first time in European art history, a central theme in sculpture. His collaboration with the renowned art dealer and bronze caster Adrien Aurélien Hébrard—who also reproduced works by Degas and Rodin—helped bring Bugatti’s sculptures into major art collections. ------------------------------------------------- REMBRANDT BUGATTI (Mailand 1885–1916 Paris) Deux vautours, l'un couché.
