ROERICH NICHOLAS (1874-1947), AUTOGRAPH Handwritten letter to Denis Roche in Paris. 5 February 1908 2 pages of double folio, envelope with stamps, postmarked. Informs that 'the sketch '3 Magi' [3 Volkhva] is being sent under your name in accordance with your authorisation' and also mentions a sketch for the opera 'Snegrotchka': 'If you manage to see how these decorations are painted, I would be happy to hear from you on the subject'. The first performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's opera 'Snegurochka' with Roerich's decorations took place in Paris in 1908. Deni Roche (1868-1951) was a French writer and translator. Intrigued by the Russian language, he travelled to St Petersburg in 1898, where he met Tolstoy, Chekhov and Repin. He translated works by N. Leskov, I. Tourgueniev, I. Shmelev, V. Nabokov and others from Russian. His translations of Chekhov's works have been published in twenty volumes, and in 1928 he was awarded the Prix Langlois by the Académie Française for his translation of the short story 'Voisins'.
