ROMANO-JEWISH STONE ALTAR WITH MENORAH. Ca. AD 1 - 300. A limestone altar of rectangular form, finely carved in high relief on all four sides; the principal face with a seven-branched menorah set upon a stepped altar, rendered in a beaded style; the reverse with a prominent pomegranate framed by curling leaves; the flanking sides each adorned with symbolic vegetation, one bearing a grapevine laden with fruit, the other with a stylised sheaf of wheat. The rim is bordered with a continuous row of triangular dentils; the base supported by four arched feet, the underside deeply recessed in a cruciform pattern. With an even light brown surface and minor wear consistent with age. Size: 340mm x 150mm; Weight: 17.5kg Provenance: Private London collection, acquired on the UK art market; Ex. A.
