Lot no. 1180
“SEAU À VERRE” WITH A GREEN BASE
Sèvres, ca. 1771.
Green ground with floral reserves in an etched leaf border decorated with floral tendrils. LL monogram mark with the year letter S for 1771 and painter's mark L. for Denis Levé, 1754–93(?) in blue, incised mark.
H 10.5 cm.
Provenance:
Family estate, Basel.
The decoration of this glass cooler is comparable to that of an extensive Sèvres service acquired in 1763 by the Manufactory from Henri Léonard Jean-Baptiste Bertin (1720–1792), a high-ranking official of the French government who, as Commisaire du Roi, was also responsible for the porcelain manufactory between 1767 and 1778. A large part of the service came into the possession of the Barons von Rothschild in the 19th century. All parts of this service bear the date letter K for 1763.
A considerable number of pieces with the year letter S for 1771, corresponding to the lot on offer, were later combined with Bertin's service (see Christie's London, Rothschild Masterpieces, 11.11.2023, Lot 4). The eight pieces signed S for 1771 may have been supplemented to Bertin's service (D. Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th Century, Little Berkhamsted, 2015, vol. II, p. 478 and pp. 333-334, 341-342, 357-359, 475-478).
