Lot no. 11
CUNEIFORM CLAY TABLET
Middle Euphrates, Late Bronze Age, c. 13th-12th century BC
Transaction between two families concerning a marriage. Mr Bulla and his wife Aštar-ummi 'give up' their daughter to Mr Tia's widow in exchange for a sum of money, the counter-dot (terhatum or 'bridegroom's present'). The father entrusts half of it directly to his daughter. This contract is a duplicate, with minor variations on the version already known (except for the mention of the terhatum, which does not appear).
From Emar, ancient Meskene, or thereabouts.
Size: 6.2 x 8.2 cm
Provenance: Rennes Enchères, Rennes, 22 April 2013: no. 29 (ill.)
