Lot no. 37
Technique: oil on canvas Dimensions: 75x63 cm; with frame 88x74.5 cm The Virgin and St Joseph go to the Temple 40 days after giving birth, a time before which women were considered impure by Mosaic laws. As a custom, a pigeon and a lamb were offered in sacrifice for rich families and a pair of pigeons for poor couples, as in the case of Mary and Joseph. The iconography is typical of that time: in the temple, none of the Wise men recognise in the infant the Saviour of the World, which is instead done by two perosons representing the left side of the painting: by Simeon - who was foretold that he would not die before seeing the Messiah. - by the prophetess Anna who "spoke of the child to those who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem" (Luke 2:38). Next to the Child's hand, held in the hands of the pious Simeon, is a lighted candle, the rite of which is still repeated in the Catholic liturgy. In spite of the traditional iconography that wants the Saviour's mother and father present in the representation of this event, they do not appear in the painting presented. Re-painted painting.
