From then on, he painted nothing but scenes of the Muslim world. This tireless traveller endeavoured to capture all the poetry of the landscapes of North Africa, the Near and Middle East. In 1851, he spent eighteen months in Constantinople, from which he drew several pictures that were shown at the Paris Salon and at the Universal Exhibitions. Enveloped in a cloud of dust, the caravan does not seem to be paying any attention to the bones lying on the ground, as if to warn them of the dangers of the desert.
