Lot no. 242
WAGNER Richard. Judaism in music. Brussels, Imprimerie de J. Sannes, 1869; in-8, 31 pp. in contemporary bradel blue half-chagrin, gilt fillets, smooth spine with long gilt title between two fleurons, pink cover. First French edition. Very rare offprint of the translation published in the Guide Musical of the anti-Semitic pamphlet first published in German in 1850. In it, Wagner develops his opinion that Jews, eternal foreigners, are incapable of grasping the essence of Western language and music and its expressive dispositions, while acknowledging the talent of a few artists, including Mendelssohn. The influence of this text on anti-Semitism in Europe was considerable.
A fine copy.
